The efficiency and net thrust from propulsion systems and thrusters can be significantly lower than the given and specified value from the manufacturers depending on the location of the units. We have experience from testing both ships and platforms showing loss of thrust in the order of 30-70%. Such loss of thrust could be caused by the Coanda effect, interaction between propeller slipstreams and the ship/platform and/or ventilation. Model tests are often necessary to study and document such transient and complex flow phenomena. However, to save time and for a better understanding of the real flow patterns, computational flow analysis has shown to be quite effective.
CFD norway has carried out a number of such analysis on platforms and ships to study detailed flow patterns and interference.
