Professor, Dr.techn. Helge Nørstrud received his first university degree (1. Staatsprüfung) in 1957 from Graz Institute of Technology, Austria and the Diplom-Ingenieur degree from Aachen Institute of Technology, Germany in mechanical and aeronautical engineering, respectively. Prior to and during this time he also was briefly associated with the de Havilland Aircraft Company, England and the Societe Nationale d’Etude et de Construction de Moteurs d’Aviation (SNECMA), France.
He then joined the Royal Norwegian Air Force for one year and subsequently the Norwegian Institute of Technology, Trondheim as a scientific collaborator.
In 1962 he came to California where he was employed at various research organizations (Vehicle Research Corporation, National Engineering Science Company, Science Engineering Associates, Douglas Aircraft Company) until he commenced (1965) his doctorial studies under Professor Klaus Oswatitsch at the Vienna Institute of Technology, Austria. Upon completion he joined the Lockheed-Georgia Company, Marietta, USA as a scientist where he was engaged in theoretical transonic flow analysis.
Professor Nørstrud returned to the Norwegian Institute of Technology in 1973 where he is responisble for the subjects of aerodynamics, gas dynamics and aerothermodynamics at the Department of Mechanics, Thermo- and Fluid Dynamics. He is a member of the NATO/ AGARD’s Fluid Dynamic Panel and a member of the Board of Directors for the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics in Belgium. He also is a Corresponding Member of the International Academy of Astronautics (Engineering Sciences) and an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
Professor Nørstrud is a cofounder of CFD norway as where he is a technical consultant. CFD norway started its activity in computational fluid dynamics in 1988 and works in close cooperation with the Department of Mechanics, Thermo- and Fluid Dynamics, Section Fluid Dynamics of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
